OF TWO, the first artistic installment of The Bridge, offers an interactive light installation. It is scheduled to remain for a period of three months in the lens of the footbridge.
For the inauguration of the installation, the project provides a night of performances. Also, a program of performances will be scheduled throughout the duration of the installation.
OF TWO symbolizes a questioning on human relations: it emphasis the phenomenon of a “social encounter.” In the installation, the lens of the footbridge is illuminated and revealed by the passing and crossing of people. In the performance, the lens is illuminated by the encounter of two individuals.
THE INSTALLATION
Two rows of light tubes run the length of the “lens,” the center of the bridge. The tubes are made of polycarbonate with integrated LED lights and motion sensors. They measure 2.4 meters at the lower sides and 3.2 meters at the higher part.
As the integrated sensor system of a tube registers people’s presence and movements, it slowly begins to illuminate. They continue to light up one by one as they trace the pedestrian’s journey from one side of the lens to the other.
The light patterns are infinite. If there is one person, it lights up one way. If there are two, three, four, ten or twenty persons, they will react another way.
The Bridge becomes “organic,” it comes alive in a fleeting wake generated by those who traverse it.
THE PERFORMANCE
Two performers stand, one on either side of the lens.
Gradually, they begin to move towards each other. They continue slowly towards the "point of contact," their union at the "lens," the center of the footbridge
The light is witness to this meeting as it reveals the existence of the bridge. Like a luminous cloud, the connection takes shape 6m (20ft) above the Seine rives, exhibiting the essence of the bridge: the union of two arcs.
